Many individuals asked
us how they could give or do more. So recently we created
a unique opportunity for you to become a Charter Donor to
the EPF and help the organization gain momentum, achieve
financial independence, and accomplish greater goals. Read
about our tax-exempt status.
We know that the EPF cannot
do all things for all communities and environments deserving
of support. Below are some of the projects that we will
be supporting in 2002.
Library Project: Ladakh, India
The EPF hopes to continue its support for a community
library project in Ladakh, India. This project is important
to the community because it provides a place for villagers
to gather, socialize, hold community events, and of course
read and learn. Last year the EPF provided financial support
for building materials and worked with villagers to volunteer
manpower towards construction.
Ladakh is a remote part of the world where these villagers
have little access to books, let alone technology. The
EPF looks to continue funding until the library is complete
with a full array of books and other community resources.
Friends of Dolpa Tapriza
School: Nepal
In Dolpa, Nepal the Tapriza
school was created to teach Tibetan children about their
culture and history because it was slowly being lost. The
Tapriza school integrates Tibetan culture, history, and
religion with the general Nepali education.
This school provides an
invaluable service not only to its students, but also to
the community, and country as a whole. As recent conflicts
have broken out in the region, the EPF believes that education,
tolerance, understanding, and the preservation of traditional
cultures within the region will increase in importance.
Sambura Health and Education Project(SHEP): Kenya
Human activity and waste
threaten a pristine turtle nesting area off the coast of
Kenya. Located near an impoverished town, the SHEP program
found a way to protect the delicate nesting area, clean
up the beaches, and give back financially to a community
in need.
Community members picked
up waste, such as foam beach sandals, along the beaches
and made them into key chains, which were later, sold through
the help of the World Wildlife Fund. Proceeds of these sales
went back to the community and the impact on the nesting
area was minimized. This is the kind of creative, meaningful,
and sustainable projects that the EPF fosters and hopes
to support further.
The Center for Traditional
Textiles of Cusco (CTTC): Peru
In Cusco, Peru, locals
are concerned that one its traditional weaving and textile
traditions were being lost amongst the youngest generations.
The CTTC was started to teach the art and traditional techniques
of Cucso weaving.
Your advice and judgment about where you think your funds
should be utilized will be beneficial. Charter Donors
to the EPF will have the opportunity to:
1) Offer suggestions of projects or destinations you
feel deserve EPF assistance
2) Direct your contribution to the region of the world
you most wish to help
3) Receive recognition in future EPF annual reports as
an original Charter Donor
4) Learn first of any new projects or project-related
travel experiences EPF is developing
5) Determine which type of project (environmental, cultural,
educational) you wish to support
However, we are confident
that with the multiplied effort of Charter Donors, like
you, we can initiate and sustain many vital projects, which
fall outside the purview of larger charitable organizations.
We hope youll see this as a chance and a challenge
for you to have a personal impact in preserving the exact
environments and communities you enjoyed as a traveler and
to help the Earth Preservation Fund shape its future.
