The goals of
the Tuang Skills Centre are to develop local people's skills and make the community
self-sufficient through the use of agriculture, wood-work, metal work and solar
technologies. The community owned center is partnering with The Institute of Southern
African Studies at the National University of Lesotho in
order train youth in technical and business skills that will help them create their own
income generating opportunities. All the staff and students involved in the project are
from the local community. Historically, the Centre has planted about 100 fruit trees and
taken part in community tree planting activities to help in soil reclamation. The centre
has dug soil and rainwater harvesting swales and grows organically produced vegetables for
the market. The Centre trains students in solar technologies, woodwork, metalwork,
building construction, agriculture including permaculture.
