Conservation through beekeeping (Tanzania)

DONET is an NGO active since 1994 in the area of environmental conservation. It has been working in developing a network of environmental concern in the Dodoma Region, where environmental degradation is among the highest in Tanzania. DONET is about to start its third phase (2000-2003) which is particularly aimed at supporting communities for conservation initiatives (through beekeeping, afforestation, land-use planning). DONET has collaborated and supported groups to implement modern beekeping as an income-generating activity which ensure environmental protection. Through a local cooperative of beekeepers (DOBEC), many grass-root communities in Dodoma urban and rural districts, already practising traditional beekeeping, have been supported to improve their knowledge, equipment and marketing opportunities, as well as ensure setting aside of forest beereserves.

Nature of EPF support:  Project promotion through print and electronic sources.
