Community-Based Mountain Tourism (Huascaran Biosphere Reserve, Peru)

Young men in Jatiluwih now shoot birds for sport or trap birds for the cage-bird trade. Tiny Yellow-throated Hanging Parrots are now trapped and sold for about 60 cents. Typically, they live just a few weeks in captivity.

To help the community members develop income generating businesses, that do no harm the bird population, Project Birdwatch is assisting the community in building an ecotourism industry. Donating capital to Project Birdwatch will help to conduct ecotourism training for local guides to develop their own businesses, and help build a canopy platforms for birdwatching. Their overall goal is to develop community-based ecotourism, emphasizing birdwatching and other nature oriented activities as away to stimulate local incentive for conservation.
Project Birdwatch has U.S. 501c3 status.

Nature of EPF support: Project promotion through print and electronic sources.
