Educate the
Children (ETC) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide educational
opportunities for low income women and children in Nepal. Programs include scholarships,
improvement of public schools, establishment of public kindergartens, and programs for
women that incorporate literacy, health education and income generation components. ETC
works in Kathmandu and in the districts of Nuwakot & Rusuwa.
Part of their Women's Development Program, which began in 1994, has been
the installation of chulo stoves. The project has been enthusiastically embraced to save
time & improve indoor air quality and women's group members have installed over 400
stoves in the project area. Education provided with the installation and followup has
emphasized how chulos improve respiratory health for women and children and also provide
important forest conservation benefits as they require less firewood than conventional
fireplaces.
Nature of EPF support: Grant awarded to pay for the materials for 50
chulo stoves.
