Despite Papua New Guinea having declared education to be a fundamental right for all citizens, sixty percent of it's students leave school without finishing their secondary education.   One of the main causes of this high attrition rate is students' and parents' inability to pay for education.  The Melanesia Education Development Foundation Inc. (MEDF) was created to help financially support children who don't have the money to attend school.  The Future Scholarship Fund's major theme is the environment.  Through this scholarship[ the MEDF hopes to provide both a general education as well as enhance students' knowledge about conserving PNG's natural resources and habitat.
