Kihunge
Integrated Conservation Initiatives (KICI) dates back to 1996 and has as its goal to
create a 10 hectare woodlot at Kihunge-Biharamulo through natural vegetation regeneration,
enrichment planting and "integrated environmentally friendly related
activities." Bush fire control has been used to stimulate natural regeneration
coupled with enrichment planting of appropriate tree species. A tree nursery there has the
capacity to raise 10,000-20,000 seedlings each year, but has been under-producing due to a
lack of sufficient resources. The seedlings that are produced are either planted on the
site, distributed freely to institutions or sold at the subsidized price of $ 0.07 to
interested individuals. Other KICI projects include modern and traditional beehives (25)
and two fish ponds raising Tilapia to supplement communiy nutrition. Rampant deforestation
in the area has been checked, and the site is now seen as a model for habitat
rehabilitation and management.
Nature of EPF support: Grant awarded for the
improvement of tree seedling production for supply to the community.
